Barcelona and Sevilla have reportedly joined Tottenham Hotspur in the race to sign Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Daichi Kamada.
The Japanese international’s contract at the Bundesliga club is set to expire at the end of the season, so Frankfurt may decide to cash in on their player while they still have the chance.
Now, the race is on to see who will sign Kamada, who is regarded as one of the most exciting midfielders in Europe at the moment after putting consistently excellent performances in Germany and at the World Cup.
Kamada has been a vital player for Frankfurt since joining the club for just £2.5m in 2017. In an impressive four-and-a-half season stint, he has been a consistent, top performer, helping his team to win the Europa League last May.
Overall, Kamada has registered 36 goals and 30 assists in 154 appearances for Frankfurt, giving him an impressive average of 0.43 goal contributions per game.
This season, he has been in excellent form once again, scoring seven goals and creating four in 13 league outings.
Where he really caught the eye, though, was playing for Japan in the World Cup, playing a starring role in their famous underdog victories over Spain and Germany, which helped his country qualify for the round of 16.
On Tuesday, TEAMtalk reported that Spurs have tabled a staggering £90,000 per week contract offer for Kamada, which is double the amount he turned down from Frankfurt.
However, with Barcelona and Sevilla now considering moving for the 26-year-old this winter, the Spanish clubs may scupper Spurs’ hopes of signing him.
Barcelona and Sevilla interest in Kamada could be a big blow to Tottenham
Antonio Conte recently declared that Tottenham’s squad is ‘miles away’ from having enough quality to challenge for the Premier League title and it seems Daniel Levy was keen to make Kamada part of the solution, potentially along with Atalanta midfielder Ruslan Malinovskyi.
The Italian manager’s current midfield options consist of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Yves Bissouma and Oliver Skipp, while Rodrigo Bentancur is sidelined with an injury. But, with Skipp more of a prospect than a Premier League-proven midfielder, Spurs need more options.
Kamada would represent an excellent player for Conte to have at his disposal. Versatile, with the ability to play as a number six or as an attacking midfielder, he could cover multiple positions and also be more of a goal threat than any of Conte’s other options.
After making their contract offer, Spurs were considered the frontrunners to sign the Frankfurt man, either now or at the end of the season.
However, according to Football Espana, now that Barcelona and Sevilla have registered an interest, it may be up to Kamada to choose his next destination.
It is no secret that Barca are currently restricted in the transfer market by financial issues, so Kamada would represent a solid low-budget signing for them.
As for Sevilla, they currently find themselves in the relegation zone, after winning just two of their 12 opening LaLiga games, so they are in desperate need of high-quality reinforcements.
Ultimately, whoever comes out on top for the midfielder will depend on two things: whether any of the clubs make an offer this month, and, whoever offers Kamada the most lucrative contract offer.
In that vein, we will have to wait and see if Barcelona or Sevilla match Tottenham’s £90,000 per week offer to the player, or, indeed, if they make a bid in the upcoming weeks.
