Change in agent helps Tottenham leapfrog Arsenal in race to land Real Madrid star

Real Madrid forward Marco Asensio has reportedly changed agent and that decision could see him join Tottenham over Arsenal this summer.

Asensio has made 37 appearances for Real this campaign, notching 11 goals and one assist. His most recent strike came in the 3-1 La Liga victory over Osasuna on Wednesday.

The 26-year-old, who mainly operates at right wing, could help Real to win the 35th Spanish league title in their history this term.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side have a 17-point advantage on rivals Atletico, who occupy second place. Barcelona are in third and have two games in hand, although it would take a serious capitulation on Real’s part for anyone else to win the trophy.

Asensio features regularly under Ancelotti. However, he rarely gets to complete a full 90 minutes in La Liga due to the form of Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo.

2021-22 could be the Spain international’s last season at the Bernabeu. Reports suggest he will be on the move once the summer transfer window gets underway.

This is mainly due to Asensio’s contract situation. His terms expire in 2023 and Real are yet to finalise an extension.

Tottenham eye Marco Asensio capture

As a result, a sale this summer would make the most sense if Los Blancos want to get a decent fee for him.

And there is interest from the Premier League. Both Tottenham and Arsenal have been in the mix to sign Asensio over the last few months.

Italian outlet Calciomercato provide an update on the wide man’s future. They claim he has changed agent and is now represented by Gestifute.

Jorge Mendes is the man in charge of the company. He also represents Prem stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Ruben Dias and Fabinho.

According to the report, Mendes’ involvement gives Tottenham and Arsenal more hope in capturing Asensio.

He is known for securing big-money deals that usually involving English teams. This could result in Asensio playing at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium or the Emirates next term.

But it seems Spurs is the more likely destination. That’s because Mendes is pushing Asensio towards Antonio Conte’s side, rather than their north London rivals.

This preference puts Spurs in a strong position to land the 26-cap international. However, it will not be straightforward to complete a deal.

That’s because AC Milan are also in the picture for Asensio’s signature. They view him as a potential replacement for loanee Brahim Diaz.

Real also have plans to keep Asensio in the Spanish capital for at least another season. Calciomercato reveal the club has sent him an ‘improved’ contract offer and are waiting to see if he will renew his deal.
