Kylian Mbappe has revealed that he held recent transfer talks with Liverpool, while also speaking to the Reds before his 2017 move to Paris Saint-Germain.

The 23-year-old has quickly become one of the most sought-after players in Europe following his recent rise. He burst onto the scene with Monaco in the Champions League and subsequently attracted attention.

Real Madrid came in for the Frenchman in 2017, but he opted to stay in his home country.

Nevertheless, Mbappe has gone from strength to strength at PSG. His future came more into the spotlight this season as he entered the final year of his deal last summer.

Fresh negotiations with Madrid and PSG dragged on until earlier this month, when he signed a new PSG deal.

However, Mbappe has now revealed to The Telegraph that Liverpool were also recently in the running to sign him.

“We talked a little bit, but not too much,” the striker said. “We talked a little bit.”

The revelation comes after Reds boss Jurgen Klopp admitted that his club were interested in Mbappe. However, the manager insisted that the finances of a potential deal put Liverpool off.

Klopp said: “Of course we are interested in Kylian Mbappe, we are not blind. We like him and if you don’t like him then you have to question yourself. But, no, we are not, we cannot be part of these battles.

“There must be other clubs involved and that is fine. He is a great player.”

However, Klopp and Liverpool’s admiration for Mbappe goes back to 2017, when he was still at Monaco. And the France international has revealed how his mother would have loved his son to move to Anfield.

“I talked to Liverpool [in 2017] because it’s the favourite club of my mum, my mum loves Liverpool,” he said.

“I don’t know why, you will have to ask her. It’s a good club and we met them five years ago. When I was in Monaco I met them. It’s a big club.”

Mbappe talks future plans

Mbappe’s new PSG terms will reportedly see him earn £650,000 per week and £34million per season.

He called Real Madrid president Florentino Perez to inform him of his decision, but has insisted that a move to the Spanish capital in the future is not off the table.

“You never know what can happen in the future,” he told BBC Sport.

“I give up to think about the future, I only think about the present and the present is I signed a new contract for three years more at Paris St-Germain.”

“Everybody knows I wanted to leave last year,” the striker added in a press conference.

“I was convinced that was the best decision at the time. The context is different now, in sporting terms and personal terms. France is the country where I grew up, I’ve always lived here and leaving wasn’t right. The sporting project has changed as well, that made me want to stay, I don’t think my story is over yet.”

Liverpool can dream but must face reality

Mbappe would of course be a fantastic signing for Liverpool. His pace on the counter-attack and eye for goal would fit Klopp’s system perfectly.

However, Klopp is right that Liverpool must face the reality that the finances of a deal put them out of reach of the striker.

The Reds are still in negotiations with Mohamed Salah over a new contract. The Egyptian reportedly wants in excess of £300,000 per week.

Liverpool have concerns that such a deal will break their wage structure.

As such, with Mbappe earning over £600,000 per week, there is no way Liverpool could budge to his demands.

Even if they did, it could cause issues in the squad, with other players demanding an uplift closer to what the Frenchman would earn.
