Barcelona have had a transfer bid for Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski rejected, according to reports.
Lewandowski has been the subject of a lot of transfer rumours in the build-up to this summer window. The Polish striker has suggested he is looking for a move away from Bayern Munich, as he hopes for a new challenge elsewhere. However, the German giants are reportedly keen to keep hold of their man for another season.
According to German outlet Sport1, Barcelona placed an initial bid of £25m for Lewandowski’s services.
The bid was rejected, however, the Spanish club are expected to table an improved bid in the next few days.
Having missed out on the La Liga title to rivals Real Madrid this season, boss Xavi is hoping to recruit well in summer to challenge next campaign.
It is reported that the former midfielder views Lewndowski as the perfect signing to put pressure on Los Blancos inside the Spanish league.
And it’s easy to see why Xavi would think this. For the last few years, Lewandowski has been viewed as the most prolific striker in the world of football.
The 33-year-old has continued this reputation throughout the Bundesliga this season. From 34 league games, the striker has netted 35 times and also contributed three assists.
In the Champions League, his form is even better. Lewandowski averaged a goal every 67 minutes inside the competition before his side were narrowly knocked out by Villarreal at the quarter-final stage.
Chelsea fall behind in Lewandowski race
Chelsea have been heavily linked with an interest in the 33-year-old striker for some time.
But due to Government sanctions currently being enforced at Chelsea, the West London club have not been able to place a bid themselves.
Tuchel has already hinted that he ideally wants to improve his attacking options this summer. However, at the same time, he acknowledged the problems Chelsea currently have in dealing with transfers.
With Barcelona reportedly lining up a second bid, this could spell problems for Chelsea in the long run.
The sanctions in place will last until a takeover has been completed from Roman Abramovich. American businessman Todd Boehly is expected to complete the purchase in the next few weeks, subject to approval.
However, only time will tell if the sanctions can be lifted in time for Chelsea to challenge Barcelona for his signature.
