Man Utd register shock interest in Mason Mount, as talks over new Chelsea contract ‘stall’ due to key development

Chelsea and England attacking midfielder Mason Mount

Manchester United have reportedly registered a shock interest in Chelsea star Mason Mount, with contract talks between him and the Blues stalling.

Mount has been on Chelsea’s books the entirety of his career. He has had successful loan spells at Vitesse and Derby County, but other than that the attacking midfielder has always appeared in the famous blue shirt.

Mount’s record for Chelsea stands at 30 goals and 31 assists in 160 matches. He got his opportunity during Frank Lampard’s time in charge and is now an integral first-team player.

Blues fans have voted Mount as their Player of the Season for the last two years running.

It’s not surprising given the 23-year-old’s impressive form. During 2021-22, he found the net 13 times in 53 games. 16 assists also came Mount’s way.

He finished third in the club’s top scorers list, behind only Romelu Lukaku and Kai Havertz.

According to a recent report, Chelsea want to reward Mount for his fine displays with a new contract.

They are willing to double his wages from £80,000 a week to £160,000 a week – or maybe even more than this.

Big update on Mason Mount future

But The Sun provide an update on Mount’s situation, and it’s not good news for Chelsea supporters.

They claim contract renewal talks between Mount and club officials have stalled as a result of a key development – the takeover.

Many would have been expecting new owner Todd Boehly to finalise Mount’s future as one of his first tasks.

But the report claims the Englishman’s future at Stamford Bridge is ‘no longer secure’ due to the delay in negotiations. That’s despite his current terms running until 2024, which gives Chelsea time to sort an extension.

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is ‘well aware’ of the uncertainty surrounding Mount’s future. And he wants the Red Devils to swoop in, should the star become available.

Plus, United have already told Mount’s agent about their transfer interest, which may give him some thinking to do.

Ten Hag has reportedly been tracking the player’s progress since his loan spell with Vitesse in Holland.

As a result, the Dutch coach would love to work with Mount at Old Trafford. However, it is an ambitious ploy.

As previously mentioned, Mount’s Chelsea contract doesn’t run out until 2024. That puts Thomas Tuchel’s side in a good position as they don’t have to sell this summer.

The Blues are highly unlikely to allow Mount to leave given his status as an academy graduate and now a senior star.

And the last thing they want to do is strengthen a Premier League rival in the form of United. If Chelsea were forced into a sale, they are more likely to agree one with a foreign club such as Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, United centre-half target Jurrien Timber has given a candid interview about his future, with Ten Hag hoping for a reunion with the Ajax man.
