Man Utd transfer latest: Ten Hag beaten to punch as Red Devils lose out to Prem rivals in Malcolm Ebiowei chase

Manchester United’s summer transfer window frustrations have hit new heights after Derby County starlet Malcolm Ebiowei picked Crystal Palace over a move to Old Trafford.

United and Tottenham have both been tracking the forward for months, while the Red Devils actually held talks with the player’s representatives in recent weeks.

The 18-year-old burst onto the scene under United legend Wayne Rooney last season. However, it appears Ebiowei has opted for a move that represents the better chance of first-team football.

According to transfer insider Fabrizio Romano, Ebiowei completed his Palace medical earlier this week. He will sign a five-year deal at Selhurst Park, running until 2027.

Ebiowei was understood to be on Erik ten Hag’s shortlist to bolster his attacking options at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman currently has Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Anthony Elanga as forward options.

Edinson Cavani will leave on a free on July 1 and Mason Greenwood remains suspended. Martial is also keen on a permanent Manchester United exit and Rashford had a woeful 2021-22 campaign.

Cristiano Ronaldo will also turn 38 midway through next season, although the Portuguese remains a reliable goal source.

United had eye on future with Ebiowei

Even though Ebiowei is being viewed as a signing for the future, his decision will come as a blow.

The young forward scored seven goals and an assist in seven U18 Premier League games last season. He was also directly involved in three goals in Derby’s final three Championship outings.

A lack of summer signings is currently hampering the build up to pre-season for Ten Hag.

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong remains his top target but negotiations are proving troublesome.

Ajax attacker Antony is, however, keen on joining up with his old boss at Old Trafford. The Brazilian winger scored 12 goals and added 10 assists last season and is valued at around £40m.
