Tottenham make decision over Hojbjerg future amid consequences of Bissouma capture

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Harry Kane celebrate Tottenham goal during Premier League clash at Manchester City

Tottenham Hotspur are not intending to sell Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg despite their recent capture of Yves Bissouma, it has been claimed.

Bissouma became the latest new arrival at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium when joining from Brighton recently. He will strengthen a department that had already increased in number with the January purchase of Rodrigo Bentancur.

As such, the competition for places in their midfield is growing. It has led to exit rumours for the likes of Harry Winks and Hojbjerg.

There remains a strong chance the Englishman could leave. He has been linked with Everton, as well as some suitors in Spain.

But as for his Danish teammate, there will be no such exit. According to Football London, Tottenham are not listening to offers for Hojbjerg.

Instead, they still feel the former Southampton man is a key member of their leadership group. On the pitch, his qualities can complement Bissouma, Bentancur and Oliver Skipp.

Hence, he will remain a key part of Antonio Conte’s project as Tottenham return to the Champions League.

In turn, that will disappoint his suitors elsewhere. The 26-year-old was reportedly on the radars of Premier League rivals Newcastle and Jose Mourinho’s Roma in Serie A.

But under contract in north London until 2025, it appears Hojbjerg will be staying put.

Tottenham right to be keeping Hojbjerg

During the 2021-22 season, he made 48 appearances across all competitions, clearly earning the trust of Conte and his predecessor Nuno Espirito Santo, just as he had with Mourinho before.

Across his whole Tottenham career so far, Hojbjerg has played in 101 matches. The defensive midfielder has scored five goals and provided nine assists.

He should get the chance to add to his tallies and has every chance of competing for his place in Conte’s evolving midfield. A partnership of Hojbjerg and Bissouma would certainly be solid, while Bentancur or Skipp could be added into the mix if the coach opts for a midfield three.

Hojbjerg would be the most experienced of the lot. But at his age, his prime years are still ahead of him. Therefore, keeping him at Hotspur Way will be a sensible decision.
