Valentin Castellanos transfer: NYCFC asking price not met amid Leeds interest

NYCFC are yet to receive a suitable offer for Taty Castellanos but are open to selling the striker for the right price, 90min sources confirm.

The Argentine striker is one of the most sought-after players in Major League Soccer right now after winning the Golden Boot last year with 19 goals in 32 regular-season appearances. Castellanos went on to score three goals in three Playoff outings to fire NCYFC to MLS Cup glory, continuing that form into 2022 with 11 goals in 18 games so far.

As revealed by 90min last week, fellow CFG club Manchester City - who have had first refusal on all CFG players since NYCFC lost Giovanni Reyna to Borussia Dortmund in 2019 - have turned down the chance to sign Castellanos, with Pep Guardiola already strengthening his forward line with the likes of Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez.

But the Premier League champions have recommended Castellanos to a number of other English top-flight clubs. The likes of West Ham United, Newcastle United, and Everton are thought to be keeping tabs on the striker but 90min understands Leeds United are most interested.

The Whites have representatives currently in the United States and as well as Castellanos, are understood to be looking at another American-based player. Leeds have already brought in USMNTstar Brenden Aaronson from RB Salzburg this summer, reuniting him with his former head coach and fellow American Jesse Marsch.

A source with knowledge of the situation told 90min that, given the hole his departure would leave in Ronny Deila's team, NYCFC would only sell if a substantial offer was put on the table and that the reigning MLS Cup champions are very unwilling to be negotiated down, fully aware of Castellanos' value as a Golden Boot winner and Argentina youth international.
