Chelsea learn Presnel Kimpembe transfer value as PSG set price for old Tuchel pupil

Presnel Kimpembe clapping PSG fans

Kimpembe is one of a number of centre-backs Chelsea have their eyes on after the exits of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen. A move to Stamford Bridge would reunite him with former PSG head coach Thomas Tuchel, as well as fellow defender Thiago Silva.

He is far from their only option, while there could be strong competition for his signature. However, he is someone they will be keeping tabs on.

And there have been some updates from France which they could take encouragement from. According to Foot Mercato, PSG may be open to selling Kimpembe this summer.

They are reshaping their defence, building around Sergio Ramos and targeting new players like Milan Skriniar. In turn, Kimpembe may face more competition for places.

As a consequence, he could look elsewhere for a club to spend his prime years at. Only under contract in Paris for another two years, the 26-year-old may now have the chance to depart.

Indeed, the report claims PSG have set an asking price of €50m in the event of Kimpembe leaving this summer. In Chelsea’s money, at present exchange rates, that would make him a £43.1m investment.

Foot Mercato add that Juventus are another suitor, but they do not yet know if either club would be willing to meet PSG’s valuation.

Kimpembe transfer would set new Chelsea benchmark

Chelsea are accustomed to spending upwards of £40m on players. They have done so 10 times in their history. However, somewhat surprisingly, they have never spent a sum that high on a centre-back.

Instead, their current most expensive purchase in that position was David Luiz, also from PSG, for £31.5m in 2016.

They may have to make a stretch to sign someone like Kimpembe, but they were probably aware of that already anyway. Strengthening their defence is a key task on their transfer agenda this summer, so they will have to spend significantly to do so.

Kimpembe has 220 PSG appearances behind him, so would be worth investing in. He is still approaching his prime years and knows Tuchel well.

As a left-footer, he could slot in on that side of the back three, where the right-footed Rudiger tended to play last term. Hence, as long as he adapts to the Premier League, he may be worth the €50m hit.
