Man Utd mull over Ivan Toney transfer raid

Brentford are expecting bids for striker Ivan Toney this summer and one may even come from Manchester United.

Toney stepped back up to the Premier League with Brentford last season, after previously making two appearances in the 2015-16 edition with Newcastle United.

The 26-year-old was coming off the back of a 31-goal Championship season, which helped Brentford to promotion. In the top-flight, he remained reliable with 12 goals from 33 games.

Despite having a contract until 2025, his future is now a source of intrigue. It has been known for a while that he has many admirers elsewhere in the Premier League.

According to the Sunday Mirror, Toney could be targeted by his former club Newcastle, as well as West Ham, Leeds or Manchester United.

All four clubs may have a need for a goalscorer. Chris Wood hasn’t hit the heights since his January move to Newcastle, who have also missed out on prime target Hugo Ekitike.

West Ham have failed to sign a striker since selling Sebastien Haller 18 months ago. Meanwhile, Leeds struggled in the absence of Patrick Bamford at times last season.

But a move to Man Utd would certainly be the most eye-catching for Toney. It would depend, the Mirror confirm, on what happens with Cristiano Ronaldo and Anthony Martial.

Ivan Toney could be striker successor

United have already lost one striker this summer after Edinson Cavani’s contract expired. The prospect of Martial being reintegrated after his loan spell at Sevilla, though, could balance out their numbers.

If he or Ronaldo move on, though, United may be short. In that regard, the Mirror believe they could turn to Toney.

And it appears Brentford are well aware of the risk of losing Toney this summer. The report concludes they expect to have to fend off at least one bid from somewhere this summer.

If Toney was to choose Man Utd as his next destination, he would be following in the footsteps of former Brentford teammate Christian Eriksen.
