Liverpool will meet Rangers alongside two familiar foes in this season’s Champions League group stages, with Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham also learning their fates.
The Reds picked out the Scottish giants from Pot 4 in one of the highlights of the draw. The pair will also meet Napoli and Ajax in Group A. Liverpool faced those two in the group phase in 2018/19 and 2020/21, respectively.
Premier League champions City, the only English team from Pot 1, are in Group G alongside Sevilla, Borussia Dortmund and FC Copenhagen.
Tottenham, who were in Pot 2 alongside Liverpool and Chelsea, drew last season’s Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt from Pot 1.
Spurs will also play Portuguese side Sporting and Marseille in Group D upon their return to the Champions League.
That means Chelsea are alongside Liverpool in drawing a champion from last season in Pot 1. Serie A winners AC Milan are their pick in Group E. The Rossoneri are looking to do better than last season, when they finished bottom of Liverpool’s group.
Chelsea also play RB Salzburg and Dinamo Zagreb.
Other highlights from group stage draw
Elsewhere, Bayern Munich v Barcelona (Group C) and Juventus v Paris Saint-Germain (Group H) are the highlights of the group stage clashes between some of Europe’s heavyweights.
Inter are also in Group C, from which Viktoria Plzen will do well to qualify.
Atletico Madrid and Porto will face off in Group B again, after two clashes last season with Liverpool.
Tottenham are back in the Champions League for the first time since the 2019/20 season under Jose Mourinho. With Antonio Conte now at the helm, they will be looking to go as far as they can.
City are no strangers to a deep run in the competition having lost in the final and semi-finals in recent years.
Chelsea beat City in the 2021 final and lost to Real Madrid in the quarter-finals. In fact, Los Blancos also took down Man City and Liverpool on their way to a 14th triumph at Europe’s top table.
Carlo Ancelotti’s men are in Group F with RB Leipzig, Shakhtar Donetsk and Celtic. It is 15 years since there was double Scottish representation in the Champions League.
