Ajax star Edson Alvarez is reportedly looking to force through a move to Chelsea after Blues owner Todd Boehly launched a £43million bid for the Mexico international midfielder.

According to Dutch oulet De Telegraaf, Chelsea made their offer after their 2-1 loss at Southampton, a game that Thomas Tuchel claimed his side were ‘soft’ and conceded their goals too easily.

Alvarez, who can play as a defensive midfielder or at centre-back, is keen on a move to England. Indeed, the report adds that he was pushing for an exit earlier in the summer when Newcastle were showing an interest.

De Telegraaf adds that the 24-year-old views a move to Stamford Bridge as a great chance to take his career to a new level.

The report claims that Alvarez has prompted Ajax into Chelsea talks. The main problem revolves around how quickly the transfer will have to get done.

Alvarez, who has made 107 appearances for Ajax, could also earn quadruple his current wage at Chelsea.

He moved to Holland from Mexican side Club America in 2019. And despite his young age has earned 58 caps for Mexico.

His potential addition will take Chelsea’s summer spend upwards of £250m. Indeed, the Blues have already brought in the likes of Wesley Fofana, Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly.

Tuchel looking to bolster Chelsea spine

Fofana will certainly bolster a defence that has looked vulnerable in the early part of the new campaign.

And speaking after his switch, Fofana said: “The two last days have been really big for me and I’m very happy.

“I trained this morning with the team and it’s a dream for me. I’m very excited to start playing games for the fans and the club.

“I’m here to win trophies – the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, everything. I came here to win and the club is built to win trophies so I’m here to continue that.”

If he signs in time, Alvarez could make his Chelsea debut against West Ham on Saturday. That’s assuming he gets international clearance in time.

As for Ajax, they could be about to lose another of their top talents.

The Dutch giants have already sold Noussair Mazraoui, Ryan Gravenberch, Lisandro Martinez and Sebastien Haller this summer, with Antony also set to be announced as Manchester United’s latest signing.
