Bayern Munich goalscorer admits referee got Dembele penalty call wrong

Speaking to Cadena SER, Bayern Munich defender Lucas Hernandez has admitted that Barcelona should have been awarded a penalty in their UEFA Champions League encounter on Wednesday.

The incident came about close to half-time when Ousmane Dembele went on a dangerous run from the right flank. In order to stop him, Bayern left-back Alphonso Davies went into a challenge and appeared to have caught the Frenchman and very little of the ball.

However, the referee did not take any interest nor did the VAR intervene even though it looked like a clear penalty on replays.

And Lucas Hernandez, who scored Bayern’s first goal in the 2-0 victory, has admitted that it might have been a penalty on Dembele.

The defender tried to downplay the question initially, as he said: “What penalty? Are you getting me right now?” However, after being put on the spot by former referee Iturralde Gonzalez, he admitted: “It was a ‘little’ penalty on Dembele,”

In another interview with COPE, Hernandez was asked about his thoughts on Xavi’s statements about Barcelona deserving more than what they got. In response, he said:

“Well, in the end, the result is what it is. If a team leaves without conceding a goal they deserve the victory. Barça had been at a great level, but what counts is the goal and today they have not been successful.”

On keeping Robert Lewandowski quiet on his return to the Allianz Arena, Hernandez said: “We defended Lewandowski very well, and we knew he was going to have his chances. We had to be close.”

The result means Bayern Munich now move to the top of Group C, with six points from two games. Barcelona are in second place, level on points with Inter Milan who beat Viktoria Plzen on Wednesday.
