Lionel Messi makes history with new bizarre Champions League record

Lionel Messi is one of the greatest ever to have graced the game of football. The 35-year-old former Barcelona captain has shattered all sorts of records throughout the course of his illustrious career and continues to do so.

Having left Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain last year, Messi did not have the best of starts to life in France. However, he has come into his own in 2022 and has started the new campaign solidly.

Indeed, in ten matches across all competitions, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner has already contributed five goals and eight assists, leading the charge for PSG at a time when there are some rifts between Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

On Wednesday night, Messi opened his account in the UEFA Champions League for the ongoing campaign as he found the back of the net in PSG’s 3-1 victory over Maccabi Haifa.

With that goal, the Argentina captain made history as he became the first-ever footballer to score a goal in 18 consecutive seasons in the Champions League (!).

Messi has an amazing record when it comes to Europe’s premier footballing competition, which he has won four times, all during his time at Camp Nou.

The 35-year-old superstar is second on the list of all-time highest goalscorers in the Champions League with 126 strikes to his name, with only Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of him.

When it comes to all-time leading goalscorers for a single club in the competition, Messi tops the chart with his 120 goals for Barcelona. He is also the only player to have scored in 16 successive campaigns in Europe’s top club competition for the same team.

And, on Wednesday, he added another record to his name.

There have been talks about Messi returning to Barcelona next summer when his contract with PSG expires. However, he will decide on his future only in 2023, once the FIFA World Cup in Qatar is out of the way.
