Manchester City set to break Academy Stadium WSL attendance record against Arsenal

City could set a WSL attendance record for the Academy Stadium on Sunday

Manchester City are set to break the attendance record for a women's match at the Academy Stadium after selling out their WSL curtain raiser against Arsenal on Sunday.

The current attendance record for a women's match at the Academy Stadium was set during the 2021/22 campaign, as 5,317 supporters witnessed City beat rivals Manchester United 1-0 thanks to Caroline Weir's stunning chip.

City have announced that they have sold out their 7,000 capacity stadium for the clash with Arsenal on Sunday, and should comfortably surpass their current attendance record even in the result of no shows.

The fixture kicks off at 19:00 (BST), and sees last season's WSL runners-up Arsenal take on the 2021/22 Continental Cup champions City.

City are one of a number of WSL clubs with an eye on attendance records following the momentum generated by Euro 2022. Arsenal are set to break the all-time WSL attendance record later in September, with over 40,000 tickets sold for their north London derby clash with Tottenham at the Emirates, while Reading are expecting a club record crowd for their WSL opener against Liverpool at the Madejeski Stadium on Sunday.

City announced in August that the club had already seen record season ticket sales ahead of the 2022/23 season, while over 10,000 tickets were sold for December's Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium within a week of tickets going live.

City's current WSL attendance record was set on the opening day of the 2019/20 campaign, with 31,213 fans pouring into the Etihad for the WSL's maiden Manchester derby.
