Barcelona will need to offload few players to make important signings in January – report

Last week, Barcelona president Joan Laporta hinted that the club could dip their toes into the transfer market again in January to further bolster their squad.

The Catalans splurged heavily in the summer, signing the likes of Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde, Raphinha, and Pablo Torre along with the likes of Franck Kessie, Andreas Christensen, Marcos Alonso and Hector Bellerin, who arrived for free.

However, the La Liga heavyweights will enter the market again in the winter as there are a couple of urgent needs that seemingly need to be addressed.

The pivot position in the middle of the park has emerged as a major concern due to the lack of alternatives for Sergio Busquets. The Barcelona skipper has made some mistakes in the last couple of matches and the club are intent on finding a solution in January.

At the same time, a new right-back could also be signed, considering Sergi Roberto’s underwhelming displays and Bellerin’s injury problems.

Amidst this, Mundo Deportivo is now claiming that Barcelona will need to sell a few players if they are to make any important signings during the winter transfer window in 2023.

It is no secret that the Blaugrana had some problems with La Liga’s Financial Fair Play rules during the summer, which played a part in the delayed registration of players like Kounde, Alonso and Bellerin.

And similar issues could occur with any signings they might make in January. Hence, Barça need to generate some salary ‘fair play’ before bringing in any new faces midway through the season.

There had been talks about the Catalan giants wanting to sell veteran stars like Gerard Pique and Jordi Alba, while Frenkie de Jong’s name has also been mentioned in the media as a possible candidate to be sold by the club.

It remains to be seen how Joan Laporta & co. decide to go about their planning and execution for the winter transfer window. What seems clear at this moment is that Barcelona will look to make inroads into the market again come January.
