Exclusive: Aston Villa owners green light 'huge' January overhaul

Aston Villa are ready to hand Unai Emery a “huge” January transfer kitty, sources have told Football Insider.

The Midlands club have spent more than £430million on signings since Naseef Sawiris and Wes Edens took over in 2018.

But the ambitious owners have made it clear to Emery that he will be backed to the hilt in January as the club prepare for another round of big-money signings.

The club are prepared to spend “huge” sums, a well-placed source told Football Insider, across the January and summer windows next year.

New boss Emery will be given a major say on the positions that need strengthening as well as the players targeted.

Steven Gerrard, who was given the boot by Edens and Sawiris following Villa’s 3-0 defeat to Fulham last Thursday (20 October), oversaw £63m worth of signings in the summer.

That followed a January window in 2021-22 during which Lucas Digne arrived for £27m while Philipe Countinho joined on a loan deal that has since been converted to a permanent transfer.

Villa recorded annual financial losses of £37.3m in 2020-21, down on £99.5m the previous year.

They are, however, expected to announce a profit when they publish their accounts for 2021-22.

That will make any new additions easier to square with Financial Fair Play, as will the several share injections actioned by the owners in recent years.
