Expert hits back over Liverpool boss Klopp after journalist wind-up

Jurgen Klopp’s response to recent comments made by former Liverpool star Dietmar Hamann are not a “big deal” despite the coverage they have received.

That’s according to former Rangers and Scotland boss Alex McLeish, speaking exclusively to Football Insider amid the manager’s latest comments.

As quoted by The Telegraph (11 October), Klopp lashed out at Hamann’s comments that the Merseysiders have “lost their spark” this season.

He said that being a former player does not give Hamann the right to say whatever he wants when he has “no idea”.

Despite a 7-1 thrashing over Rangers in the Champions League on Wednesday (12 October), the Reds’ start to the season has been underwhelming, only managing two wins from eight Premier League games.

McLeish insists Klopp’s outburst should not be blown out of proportion.

“Klopp has been magnificent in press conferences but sometimes you get a wee bit ratty about a thing when you are asked a certain question or you continue to be asked,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Ben Wild.

“We have all answered back in an aggressive way, maybe we don’t like the question. I think he’s only human in that respect and I think he deserves that respect in terms of being able to do that.

“As long as you don’t break FA rules, in terms of being in front of the journalists, then there has to be that mutual respect.

“But we have all been there. I don’t see it as a big deal, he’s just trying to defend his team.”

Liverpool are next in action against Man City on Sunday (16 October).

They sit 10th in the Premier League table.
