Leeds news: Whelan shares emphatic Bamford claim after what he's seen pre-Leicester

Noel Whelan has hailed Patrick Bamford’s “sharp” second-half display for Leeds United against Arsenal ahead of a crunch clash against Leicester on Thursday (20 October).

The former Whites striker and club ambassador, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the 29-year-old is in “desperate need” of a goal in order to kick-start his season.

Bamford came off the bench at half-time against Arsenal on Sunday (16 October) but missed a penalty and saw a goal disallowed in Leeds United’s 1-0 loss.

He is yet to score in Premier League competition this term amid a backdrop of injury problems.

Bamford netted 17 goals in 38 outings in the 2020-21 campaign – the Whites’ first season back in the top flight – but struggled for fitness throughout the 2021-22 season.

Leeds United sit 15th in the Premier League ahead of Thursday’s game, four points and five places ahead of opponents Leicester.

Whelan insisted Jesse Marsch’s side looked “much better and more balanced” with Bamford leading the line against Arsenal.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “He desperately needs a goal.

“However, we looked a much better and more balanced side in the second half when he came on and led the line.

“The only thing missing from the display was that cherry on top.

“We know how strikers work. They need that goal to give them a platform and the confidence to build on.

“I don’t think Bamford will care how the goal comes, he just needs to get on that scoring trail again.

“His performance was sharp, good touch, good runs. On another day, he would’ve come away with two goals.”
