Liverpool’s interest in Bayern Munich midfield talent Jamal Musiala has been confirmed by a respected reporter in Germany.
Musiala is one of the most promising teenagers in world football at present. He has become a key player for Bayern Munich and is growing in prominence with his national team too.
Previously an academy player at Chelsea, the prospect of a return to English football has been in the background for Musiala throughout his emergence in the senior game.
The 19-year-old recently told Bild: “The Premier League is a really strong league. The big stars go there.
“But whether I’ll go there at some point? No idea. I only know that I enjoyed my time in England. Now I’m playing for FC Bayern, one of the best clubs in the world.”
One of the clubs that have been tipped to bring Musiala back to the English game is Liverpool. They will need to replenish their midfield in 2023.
With that in mind, they have been considering a move for Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham. However, the solution might come from elsewhere in the Bundesliga – in the shape of Bayern man Musiala.
Now, Liverpool’s interest has been verified by Sky Sport Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.
The journalist tweeted on Tuesday afternoon: “Yes, [Liverpool] is interested in Musiala. Like any other top club in the world.
“But a transfer is no topic at this stage. He doesn’t want to leave Bayern and he is not for sale as mentioned by [Bayern sporting director Hasan] Salihamidzic at Sky.”
For what it’s worth, Musiala is under contract with Bayern Munich is due to run until 2026. Already with 90 appearances for the club under his belt, he might have a lot more to achieve in Germany before he considers any options in England.
But with his ability to play as an attacking midfielder, a winger or more centrally and slightly deeper, Musiala will remain a prospect to keep an eye on for many elite clubs over the coming years.
Liverpool might have to find a more realistic target than Jamal Musiala
Musiala is certainly someone who should remain on Liverpool’s radar if his current progress continues.
However, if it is set in stone that he wants to stay at Bayern for now, the Reds will have to switch their focus elsewhere.
Next summer, Arthur Melo will have completed his loan spell from Juventus. In addition, James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be out of contract, while Thiago Alcantara will be entering the final year of his.
Hence, strengthening in midfield will be an immediate priority for Liverpool. They will not be able to afford to wait any longer, even if they have been sticking to a mantra of only targeting the right players.
There might be some others on the market in the new year who could be more attainable than Musiala. But there are many years ahead in which they could maintain their interest in him too.
