Alan Hutton has claimed Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp “overreacted” to Bernardo Silva’s challenge on Mohamed Salah.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Tottenham and Aston Villa right-back said Klopp was deserving of the red card but understands why the Reds boss reacted the way he did.
The 55-year-old was shown a red card by referee Anthony Taylor for his reaction to Silva’s challenge on Salah in the 1-0 victory over Man City on Sunday (16 October).
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game (16 October), the Reds boss took the blame for the sending off and said that he “went over the top” but did not believe he disrespected the officials.
On Tuesday (18 October), the FA charged Klopp with breach of rule E3 for his actions.
Hutton insisted the pressure and emotion surrounding the game got to the German boss.
“I think you have to take everything with context,” he told Football Insider.
“These games are built up so high. Everything that surrounds them, the week running up to it. The emotion is there, the atmosphere, they are going at each other for the full 90-plus minutes.
“I can totally understand why he acted the way he did. He came out after and said it was a red card and he apologised for it. It is an emotional sport and it obviously just got a grip of him at the point in time.

“I understand why he did it. He knows that it was not the right thing to do. But when that emotion grabs you within a football game, it is difficult to just switch it off.
“He will take the punishment on the chin no problem. Of course he overreacted but I can understand why.“
