Eddie Howe could make two big January calls with key Newcastle figure now central to plans

Eddie Howe, Newcastle United, October 2022

Eddie Howe could reportedly make additions to two areas of his Newcastle United squad as the Magpies look to keep improving.

Howe has inspired a complete turnaround since stepping foot inside St James’ Park. Indeed, he hauled Newcastle out of a relegation battle when he took charge last season.

His influence, both tactically and with changes to the squad, has made a big difference. Indeed, he has brought in a number of key players to the side since taking the job.

Bruno Guimaraes, Kieran Trippier and Sven Botman have been some of the most crucial additions. That has been one reason why Newcastle are currently battling up at the top end of the table.

They find themselves fourth in the league, ahead of Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool. That is a big improvement from their 11th-placed finish last time out.

Furthermore, it is a massive change from scrapping down at the bottom end when Howe took over.

Indeed, before Almiron hit his purple patch, the right wing seemed as if it could benefit from some added talent.

However, the Paraguayan has now scored six goals in his last six games, and is one of the first names on the teamsheet.

The midfield could still be an area that Howe is keen on strengthening. Adding more quality, despite nobody looking out of place, would certainly not be a bad thing for the side.

However, it does seem that Howe is happy with his current midfield. Even Jonjo Shelvey, who is coming back from injury and has hardly played, seems to be an important member of that group.

Indeed, The Mirror reports that the Englishman will soon trigger a contract extension. Howe has also reportedly told him of the “huge role” he has to play in the side.

More additions will keep side improving

For Newcastle, who have only just broken into the upper echelons of the league, it will be important to keep improving. While they are in a strong position now, given they are not used to it, they could easily fall away.

While that may or may not happen, improving the squad gives them the best chance at remaining competitive.

Adding some quality to one or two areas of the pitch could allow them to continue in their top form and fight up at the top until the very end of the season.
