Last night was a special one for Barcelona midfield prodigy Gavi as he made his World Cup debut with Spain and starred in the game as his team thrashed Costa Rica 7-0.

The 18-year-old scored a goal in the second half which made him La Roja’s youngest-ever goalscorer in the World Cup, while he also became the third-youngest goalscorer of all time only behind Pele and Manuel Rosas.

Apart from his goal, Gavi bossed the game from start to finish against Costa Rica and had a hand in two other goals for Spain. So, it did not come as a surprise that the teenager was named the Man of the Match for his starring display on the day.

Addressing the media after the match, the Barcelona and Spain midfield wonderkid said (h/t FCB World): “It was a game we went out to win from the first minute. I’m very happy we won and now we’ll focus on the next game.

On his winning the Man of the Match award, Gavi said: “I’m happy with my award, but I think we all put in a great game.”

As mentioned earlier, Gavi became the third-youngest goalscorer in World Cup history with his strike against Costa Rica. He also became the youngest to find the back of the net in the tournament since Pele in 1958.

Talking about that achievement, the 18-year-old said: “I’m proud to have my name next to his and I’m very happy.”

Gavi’s Barcelona teammate, Pedri, also had a fine match for Spain against Costa Rica before being taken off close to the hour mark by manager Luis Enrique.

Gavi spoke about his relationship with Pedri, saying: “We’re good friends on the field and there’s not much to say, he’s a great player.”

Finally, the midfield sensation added that he had not imagined in his wildest dreams that his World Cup debut could go the way it went on Wednesday, as he said:

“Not even in my wildest dreams could I have imagined this. I’m very happy but this is another step and we have to keep going.”

Gavi and Spain will be in action again at the weekend when they face fellow European giants Germany in a high-profile encounter.
