Emiliano Martinez was wearing Lionel Messi’s lucky red ribbon in World Cup final

Back in 2018, more than four years before Lionel Messi became a World Champion, he was given a special good luck charm.

After missing a penalty against Iceland in the 2018 World Cup, Messi was speaking to the journalists post-game. One of the reporters present there, Rama Pantarotto of Argentina, gave him a red amulet from his mother as a ‘good luck’.

It evidently worked for the Argentina legend, who wore it against Nigeria in the last round of the group stages, and scored a stunning goal.

Now, it seems the idea of giving away a red ribbon/band for good luck has been embedded in Messi’s head. He famously gave one to Philippe Coutinho in 2019 when the Brazilian was struggling with form, and then one to Paulo Dybala during the 2019 Copa America.

Most recently, it has appeared that Messi has given the same bracelet to Emiliano Martinez, who was seen wearing it when he went up to collect his Golden Glove award for the best goalkeeper of the tournament.

Dibu was extraordinary through the competition, but once again in the final, as he made a stunning save in the 123rd minute and then saved a penalty in the shoot-out.

Evidently, Leo’s good luck charm has brought luck to his country and teammates.
