Barcelona will kickstart their campaign in Copa del Rey this midweek as they take on Intercity on Thursday.
Intercity ply their trade in the third division of Spanish football and are currently standing 16th in the Primera Federacion Grupo-II. It is a big match for the minnows, who hail from the Valencia community of San Juan de Alicante.
Heading into this contest, Intercity players have already started to showcase their respect for the opposition, with one of their stars Oriol Soldevila confirming that he had asked for the shirt of Barcelona midfield ace Pedri.
Soldevila, who was a part of the Barcelona youth academy from 2018 to 2020, is close friends with Arnau Tenas, one of the three main goalkeepers for Barça right now.
“One of my best friends in the world of football is Arnau Tenas. I have already told him that it is important for me to have Pedri’s shirt. It’s the main objective. I might have to fight with another teammate, but I’ve already made contact,” said Soldevila as quoted by SPORT.
The Intercity ace also revealed that he was a Barcelona supporter from a very young age and was excited to face them in the Copa del Rey.
“I’ve been a culé since I was a kid. Playing against Barça is a dream and not only for me, but also for my family,” he said.
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder’s desire to earn Pedri’s shirt indicates the Barcelona youngster’s influence in the lower divisions of Spanish football.
Hailing from a small town, Pedri was also once a youth player in the lower levels before he joined Barcelona. Since then, he has gone on to become one of the best young players on the planet and a model for any budding young footballer in Spain.
Pedri has indeed played a key role in Barcelona’s development this season and his services could once again be required as the Catalans take on Intercity in the Copa del Rey Round of 32 this midweek.
