Memphis Depay was a talked-about figure in the summer transfer window in Europe. The Barcelona forward was a subject of interest for many, including Manchester United, as recently revealed by Fabrizio Romano.
The Italian transfer expert claims that the Premier League giants had considered the possibility of signing Depay in the summer, but the move did not materialise.
Nevertheless, Romano adds that Depay could be up for grabs once again in this ongoing January transfer window. The Barcelona forward, in fact, is ‘one to watch’ out for, especially if the right offer comes across.
This is because Depay is coming on the back of a rather impressive World Cup that saw him play a vital role in attack for the Netherlands. Although the Oranje lost to Argentina in the quarterfinals, the Barça forward made a solid impression with his skill and technique.
Fortunes have not favoured Depay at Barcelona this season, with the former Lyon starlet falling behind the likes of Raphinha, Ansu Fati and Ferran Torres in the pecking order. But the player has continued to attract interest from across Europe.
Manchester United are one of the clubs interested in the services of the Dutchman. The Premier League giants were not quite successful with their investment on Depay in 2014, but they believe the player has matured since and has what it takes to steer the United frontline in the right direction.
The Red Devils are in the need of attacking reinforcements after the contract termination of Cristiano Ronaldo. The jury’s still out on new signing Antony as well, thus the addition of someone like Depay could go a long way in adding more quality to the club’s attack.
Depay and Barcelona, though, are yet to finalise the fate of the experienced attacker and any decision regarding his future may only be made after the Supercopa Espana semifinals in the middle of the month.
