It’s fair to say that Malang Sarr’s loan spell with Monaco hasn’t gone to plan so far and the Chelsea defender could be offered a way out.
Monaco signed the 23-year-old on a season-long loan in the summer, but he has struggled to maintain a place in the starting XI. With just four starts in Ligue 1 all season, he will now be considering his options.
The French club have been going well lately and currently sit fourth in the table. Axel Disasi and Guillermo Maripan have been their preferred centre-half partnership of late.
As Chelsea themselves recently completed a deal for Monaco defender Benoit Badiashile, Sarr could still be handed more chances in the second half of the season.
Sarr himself has only started in one league game since November though. In total, he has played 353 minutes of league football and has had a couple of appearances in the Europa League.
The Daily Mail have reported that Sevilla are interested in signing Sarr if his loan spell with Monaco can be cut short.
Sevilla are currently in the La Liga relegation zone and are desperately in need of reinforcements. The Spanish side have only collected 15 points from 17 games so far as they sit 19th in the table.
Jorge Sampaoli’s side have conceded 26 goals this season at a rate of 1.5 per game. If they are to avoid the drop they will need to play the January transfer window to their advantage.
Despite Sarr’s lack of game time this season they clearly see the value in him and would be willing to table an offer for him in January.
Does Malang Sarr have a future at Chelsea?
The 23-year-old was signed in the summer of 2020 on a five-year deal. He spent his first season out on loan with Porto before rejoining the squad in 2021/22.
Under Thomas Tuchel, Sarr was handed some minutes during last season as he started in six league matches. He also featured in cup competitions and was steadily progressing his game.
He was then loaned to Monaco in the summer of 2022 with the French club having the option to purchase him at the end of the season. As he has only featured for them sparingly so far, they look unlikely to trigger this option.
Given the drastic shake-up at the club over the past 12 months with the arrival of Todd Boehly and Graham Potter, Sarr’s future is likely to be elsewhere.
Chelsea see the likes of Wesley Fofana and Badiashile as the future of the club. They also still have the likes of Thiago Silva, Kalidou Koulibaly and Trevoh Chalobah to pick from.
