According to a report from Roger Torello of Mundo Deportivo, Nico Gonzalez’s future at Barcelona is dependent on the contract decision of club captain Sergio Busquets.
Nico is currently away on loan at Valencia, having left Barça despite Xavi wanting to keep him at the club, as he sought regular game-time. It has not been a bed of roses for the 21-year-old with Los Che as he has not played all that regularly and recently spent a significant time out on the treatment tables.
Once the season is over, Nico will be back at Barcelona, but beyond that, the La Masia graduate’s future is far from clear at this point.
This is because the Catalans are not in a position to make a decision on Nico’s future when there is uncertainty looming over the continuity of club captain Sergio Busquets.
The 34-year-old is in the final few months of his contract and is yet to commit to a new deal, with the club understood to have recently sent him a new proposal for renewal.
The offer is said to be for one year with an option for an additional twelve months based on the number of appearances he makes. It also involves a very significant pay cut for the midfielder, given the Blaugrana’s Financial Fair Play issues.
While there is a positive feeling about Busquets’ renewal, until there is a certain development on that front, there will be no concrete decision made on Nico’s future.
Another factor that could dictate the 21-year-old’s continuity at Barcelona next season is Financial Fair Play. If the Catalans do not have enough margin to spend, they might look to retain the midfielder or alternatively could decide to sell him and generate revenue.
So, as things stand, there is no clarity over what the future holds for Nico. The La Masia ace, who signed a contract until 2026 before leaving on loan, is focused on ending the season strongly at Valencia for now.
