Tottenham are being tipped to sign a very impressive Premier League defender in a £60million deal, although club chiefs will be hoping he has a better impact than Richarlison.

Tottenham spent £60m when signing Richarlison from fellow Premier League side Everton in July last year. The Brazilian forward was hoping to make a big impact in north London after scoring 11 goals in 33 games the previous season.

However, Richarlison has failed to continue his Everton form in a Spurs shirt. He has managed to score just twice in 27 appearances this term amid strong competition for places and injury problems.

Prior to his latest injury setback against Southampton, Richarlison had questioned why he does not start games more regularly under Antonio Conte and labelled the season ‘sh*t’.

Conte agreed with Richarlison about the state of Spurs’ season, as he was left fuming after the team dropped a two-goal lead and were held to a 3-3 draw by bottom club Southampton.

The manager called his players ‘selfish’ and said Spurs would not win anything while the current hierarchy is in charge. On Sunday, the club acted by parting ways with the Italian.

Chairman Daniel Levy is now hoping to begin a new era at Spurs. He is looking to appoint either Mauricio Pochettino or Julian Nagelsmann.

According to Football Insider, Marc Guehi is one player who could move to Spurs as part of their new beginnings. It is claimed that Spurs ‘lead the race’ to sign the Crystal Palace centre-back.

Spurs are on the hunt for a new central defender as they prepare to ship loanee Clement Lenglet back to Barcelona. Spurs scouts have been left hugely impressed by Guehi and have told Levy to submit an offer for him.

And the Chelsea academy graduate could become one of the most expensive players in Spurs history. Palace have set his price tag at between £50-60m, and Spurs are currently evaluating whether to match this sum.

If Guehi were to join Spurs for £60m, he would become their third-most expensive player of all time, behind Tanguy Ndombele (£63m) and Richarlison (£60m).

Although, a recent report from Football Transfers has cast doubt over whether Spurs would actually spend this kind of money on the England international.

They have apparently decided that £45m is as far as they will go. Clearly, there needs to be some negotiation between Spurs and Palace before a move can happen.

One factor which could work in Spurs’ favour is Palace potentially getting relegated. The Eagles sit in 12th place but are just three points above the drop zone.

Palace are facing an uncertain future after sacking manager Patrick Vieira and replacing him with Roy Hodgson. If they drop down to the second tier, then Guehi will be able to leave for a reduced price.

The 22-year-old would be a great capture for Spurs. He is emerging into one of the top centre-halves in the Prem and is also a leader on the pitch, which is something Spurs need.

And given his age, Guehi would be able to play at the top level with Spurs for plenty of seasons.
