Arsenal set to rival Barcelona in the race for four-time Premier League champion

Ilkay Gundogan is one of the top names on Barcelona’s shortlist as they look to reinforce their options in the middle of the park, in an attempt to offset the loss of Sergio Busquets.

It has been well-documented that the midfielder is willing to lower his economic demands in order to join Barça. He also likes Barcelona’s three-year offer and prefers moving to Spain over extending his contract at Etihad.

However, a new report from SportBILD (h/t Mundo Deportivo) suggests Barcelona could face fresh challenges in their bid to sign Gundogan. As per the German publication, the Catalans are set to face competition from Arsenal in the race to sign the midfielder.

The Premier League giants, after a botched title challenge this season, are keen on reinforcing their options in midfield and are looking for a technically astute central midfielder. Gundogan is among the top options, as the player has worked with Mikel Arteta in the past.

Arsenal are in a good space right now and could appeal to Gundogan, as it would mean the player would not have to move out of England.

Another potential challenge for Barcelona is Manchester City. The Premier League champions have offered the German international only a one-year extension. But they have been left impressed by the midfielder’s performances lately, which could lead to reconsideration in the Man City camp.

Ultimately, we might witness the Sky Blues coming up with a two-year contract offer, which could be very appealing to Gundogan. Barcelona, therefore, must move swiftly if they are to secure the services of the former Borussia Dortmund starlet in the coming summer.

Gundogan, though, is not the only target for Barça, with the club also targeting the likes of Sofyan Amrabat, Ruben Neves and Martin Zubimendi ahead of the new season.
