Spain boss considering calling up Barcelona midfielder for Nations League despite injury

Earlier this week, it was reported that Barcelona midfielder Pedri is unlikely to play again this season. The 20-year-old picked up a muscle discomfort in the La Liga game against RCD Espanyol and has since missed the Catalans’ last two matches.

Given his past issues with fitness, it was claimed that Barça were not going to risk him in the final phase of the season, especially with the league title in the bag. As such, Pedri is unlikely to step out on the pitch again for Barça in the remaining two matches.

It was also reported that Spain manager Luis de la Fuente had also decided not to call up the midfielder for the UEFA Nations League fixtures next month, so that he can give Pedri time to recover and heal is body.

However, according to a fresh report from Jordi Gil of SPORT, De la Fuente is not given up on the possibility of having Pedri at his disposal next month and is seriously contemplating calling up the 20-year-old despite his recent fitness issue.

Spain play Italy in the semi-finals of the UEFA Nations League and should they win, one of Croatia or the Netherlands will meet them in the finals of the competition.

It is no secret that Pedri is a key part of the La Roja setup and new manager De la Fuente wants to count on him, having been unable to call up the Barcelona youngster earlier in March either due to injury.

Should the 20-year-old not play Barcelona’s remaining two La Liga matches and the post-season friendly in Japan, it could give him enough time to recover for the Nations League.

It is claimed that the 2021 Golden Boy Award winner is excited about the possibility of winning his first title with the Spanish national team.

De la Fuente will announce the squad list for the fixtures on June 2 and a final decision on Pedri will be made on how his recovery progresses and the feelings he has about his fitness.
