Age has never stopped Gavi from being a dominant presence for Barcelona, not only on the ball but also in terms of leadership. The youngster makes it a point to show exactly what he feels on the field, however trivial the incident.
When Dani Ceballos pulled his hair in the Clasico in January, Gavi unsurprisingly did not take it well. The Golden boy got his revenge in the Catalans’ 2-1 win over Real Madrid at Camp Nou, shoving the midfielder in the centre of the park with the ball nowhere in sight.
The rift between the duo carried into the Spanish National Team camp ahead of the subsequent Euro qualifiers. However, La Roja manager Luis de La Fuente immediately assured fans that the duo had sorted out their differences.
“Ceballos and Gavi have shown exceptional human quality. They are going to give their lives for each other.”
According to reports from El Larguero, the bad relationship between the two midfielders has become concerning for the Spanish national team. Though both players have taken their own shots at each other, the Spanish captains side with Gavi and have spoken in his favour.
It is not the first time that the Barcelona youngster is being defended for his actions and overt aggression. Reports earlier this year stated that the RFEF had ‘zero problems’ with the Golden Boy’s behaviour and in fact, considered it ‘exemplary’.
It remains to be seen how La Fuente manages the situation and if either player faces a sanction for re-igniting the fight. In either case, the Blaugrana midfielder appears to be safe and has the team’s backing.
Gavi is set to have his new contract registered with La Liga in the coming days once Barcelona receives the green light from the league. While there have been rumours linking him away from Catalonia, the prodigy called for calm last month and assured fans of his continuity.
