Barcelona’s transfer window so far has been dictated by their financial situation. The Blaugrana are highly restricted in their spending ability, and it is evident from their pursuit of free agents and low-cost reinforcements.
The links between Joao Felix and Barcelona thus come out of the blue. The Portuguese star has been heavily linked with a move to Barcelona in recent days despite it being glaringly clear that the La Liga champions cannot finance his arrival.
According to reports from Gerard Romero, Atletico Madrid has asked La Liga about the conditions needed to oversee Felix’s move to Barcelona.
However, the league administration have made it clear to Los Rojiblancos that the operation cannot go through at the moment as the champions cannot afford it.
Joan Laporta & co. are well aware of the constraints in signing the Chelsea flop. However, they hope that they can take up the operation at the end of August if they can facilitate enough player sales.
Atletico Madrid are said to be open to Felix joining Barcelona on a loan-to-buy deal. However, manager Xavi Hernandez does not see him as a priority target at the moment. But, Laporta is a big fan of the player and appears to be the one driving the club’s pursuit of him.
The chances of Diego Simeone’s star making it to Barcelona thus appear grim, although the report suggests that the Catalans believe that a move can be possible in August if they make some sales.
For now, all eyes are on the departure front to see if the management can bring about any significant movement.
In 15 Premier League starts for Chelsea last season, the 23-year-old scored four goals and averaged just 0.4 key passes per game. He has also fallen out of favour with Diego Simeone at Atletico Madrid and looks bound for an exit. Whether he ends up at Barcelona remains the big question.
