Despite the capture of Ilkay Gundogan and Inigo Martinez, Barcelona are not enjoying the best of summers so far. The club are in financial trouble and are being unable to compete with top European giants, in the race to sign quality players.
A case in point is Arda Guler. The young Turk has joined Real Madrid on a six-year contract, even though he was very close to joining Barcelona this week.
With Guler moving to the Santiago Bernabeu, Barcelona appear to have set their sights on another youngster in Ivan Fresneda. The Real Valladolid starlet has been a target for Barça for a while now, with Xavi Hernandez looking to reinforce his options in the right-back unit.
According to MARCA, Barcelona have made efforts to sign Fresneda. The club’s sporting director Deco has recently met the player’s agents to discuss the possibility of a summer move to Camp Nou.
However, the operation won’t be an easy one for Barça. Fresneda has a deal at Valladolid until 2025, with a €20 million release embedded in his contract. Barcelona, though, are not in a position to pay anymore than €10 million for the player.
This could prove to be problematic for the Blaugrana, as there are already other clubs that are more than happy to pay €15 million for the Spaniard. The Financial Fair Play regulations mean Barcelona are not in a position to compete with those clubs financially.
Xavi remains determined to reinforce his ranks in the right-back position, especially with Jules Kounde not entirely keen on continuing as a right-back in the team.
But until Barcelona rope in fresh capital, the club will not be in a position to sign Fresneda or any other exciting young talent in Europe. However, they have reportedly managed to secure the services of Vitor Roque, even though the Brazilian is likely to join in 2024.
