Following Saudi Arabia’s big impact on the transfer market during the summer transfer window, Qatar is now also getting into the act, roping in some notable names from Europe and elsewhere.

The likes of Philippe Coutinho and Marco Verratti have made the switch to the Qatari league and now a promising young talent from South America who Barcelona had their eyes on is set to follow suit.

Fabricio Diaz on his way to Qatar

Indeed, as reported by Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool Montevideo prodigy Fabricio Diaz, a target for Barcelona, is on the verge of joining Qatari club Al Gharafa.

Regarded as one of the finest up-and-coming midfielders in South America, Diaz burst onto the limelight with his performances for the Uruguay national team at the U-20 South American Championship this year.

Diaz followed it up by leading Uruguay to victory in the U-20 FIFA World Cup, putting himself on the radars of several top clubs across Europe, including Barcelona.

Despite being just 20 years old, he has made more than 100 appearances for his and is the captain as well, indicating his quality and maturity.

Barça had considered a move for him during the summer but had other priorities and with FFP complications, the youngster’s pursuit was put on the backburner.

Barça were considering January move

Recent reports, though, had suggested that a January move was being weighed up, provided new sporting director Deco gives his okay, as a possible backup and competition for Oriol Romeu.

It was also reported that Diaz could be available for a fee of around €9 million.

However, as it stands, it appears that Diaz will be moving to Qatar instead, signing for Al Gharafa, in a move worth just $6 million (€5.6 million).
