Marc Guiu became an overnight star for Barcelona after playing a sensational cameo that helped his team secure a late win against Athletic Club on Sunday.
The young La Masia youth graduate came on for the last 11 minutes, notably scoring the winner while showcasing extraordinary talent.
Speaking after the game, Guiu was ecstatic, to say the very least, as he began to describe how he felt after enjoying the best possible debut one can have.
Marc Guiu on the Athletic game
“Xavi had told me to be ready, that I would get my chance. I’ve dreamed of this moment for almost every night of my life,” Guiu said. “My teammates told me to enjoy this moment. I won’t be able to sleep tonight.”
Talking about the goal he scored, Guiu added, “When Joao Felix passed the ball, I saw the space and controlled it. I saw that Unai came out, and I knew that I had to put it at the back of the net.”
Guiu’s goal came in the 80th minute of the game. But that wasn’t his sole contribution. The youngster also completed a couple of duels and was a dynamic presence in the final third.
“I can’t believe it. I can’t breathe. I’m enjoying the moment so much. I’ve worked all my life for this and it worked out perfectly,” he said after his performance. “I haven’t looked at my phone yet, but I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to sleep tonight.”
The Spaniard also praised one senior player, in particular, for helping his ascension. That was Ronald Araujo.
“Ronald Araujo is the teammate that has helped me the most. I’m so grateful for him,” he said.
The role of La Masia
Following the game, Guiu also highlighted the role La Masia has played in helping Barcelona navigate through these tough times.
“We are working very well at La Masia. It is very important to trust the young people in these difficult times that the club is going through. Let them continue working because the opportunities will come,” he said.
“All of the youngsters, we’re doing our best to help Barcelona in difficult financial times. Me, Fermin, Lamine, Gavi,” he added.
Needless to say, Guiu could emerge as another reliable option for coach Xavi Hernandez, who has no shortage of options, as far as the young players are concerned.
A centre-forward by trade, Guiu’s dynamism and technical ability make him an interesting alternative for Robert Lewandowski.
