Barcelona midfielder Gavi suffers ACL injury, season over – report

In a devastating blow for Barcelona, midfield mainstay Gavi is understood to have suffered an ACL injury during Spain’s match against Georgia last night.

Despite La Roja having already qualified for the UEFA Euro 2024, manager Luis de la Fuente opted to start Gavi in an inconsequential game even though the youngster had exhibited signs of fatigue in the previous match.

Less than half an hour into the context, Gavi had to be taken off with the youngster leaving the pitch in tears.

ACL injury for Gavi

Following initial tests, several reliable journalists and media outlets have confirmed that Gavi has torn his ACL, and is now set to be out on the sidelines for a long period.

In fact, RAC1 is reporting that the Spanish Federation has already confirmed to Barça that the 19-year-old indeed has suffered an ACL rupture and will not play again this season.

The teenage sensation will undergo further tests once he is back at the club facilities, but it does not look good for Barcelona and the player.

An irreplaceable star for Xavi Hernandez, Gavi had featured in almost every match for the Blaugrana this term, barring the two games he was suspended.

His injury comes at an unfortunate time for the Catalans, who were not in the best of moments prior to the international break.

What did De la Fuente say?

Speaking after the game, Spain manager Luis de la Fuente commented on Gavi’s injury and expressed his concerns about it being a serious one, saying:

“It seems that Gavi’s injury is major. It’s the most bitter victory I have experienced in my life. We’re waiting for the definitive tests.”

“It is a very difficult and very hard moment for him, his club, for his teammates, for me, and for the RFEF.”

“Gavi did not understand that these things could happen to him. Nobody thinks that such a misfortune could happen to him. He was sad, hurt. Life teaches us that we are very vulnerable, and fragile, but we have to move on,” he added.

Gavi will undergo further tests at the club’s facilities later today, but the youngster’s season might be over at this point.

There is also a strong possibility that he will miss the UEFA Euro 2024 next summer given the severity of the possible ACL injury.
