Barcelona midfielder will not leave in January, working hard to regain prominence

Less than six months into his second stint at FC Barcelona, Oriol Romeu has experienced quite a roller-coaster of a ride.

The 32-year-old became a permanent fixture in the side at the start of the season, putting in some solid shifts game after game.

However, things have gone downhill for the defensive midfielder over the past couple of months as he has not only lost his place in the starting XI, but has seen a steep decline in his minutes as well.

It gave way to speculations about Romeu’s immediate future at Barcelona, with Girona understood to be keen on re-signing him in January.

In fact, it was even suggested that there are already talks being held between the two clubs about a possible return for Romeu in the winter.

Romeu not leaving in January

Now, though, SPORT is reporting that Romeu will not be leaving Barcelona for Girona during the upcoming January transfer window.

The midfielder was signed in the summer at the express request of Xavi, and is not negotiating with anyone at this point. Beyond that, Barça have not opened the door to a departure as they are still counting on him for the rest of the season.

Girona value the 32-year-old highly, but the La Liga leaders have not made any move to incorporate him immediately in this winter market.

Meanwhile, Romeu, who could return to the eleven against Antwerp, is continuing to work with his mind set on becoming useful to the Blaugrana team. The midfielder is said to be unaware of any interest from Girona at this point.

Romeu signed with Barcelona for two seasons and continues to work hard to get his chance in a season that is going to be long and in which he will certainly be needed.

Romeu is a player who is highly valued in the dressing room for his personality and his good tactical understanding.

Even though Girona and Michel see him as an interesting option, a January move is out of the question. As for the summer, things will be assessed based on how the season ends.
