Barcelona still considering free agent move for Leicester City midfielder in the summer

It’s no secret that Barcelona are exploring several options to strengthen their pivot position and if a report from SPORT is to be believed, the team from Catalonia is said to be very much interested in signing Leicester City’s Wilfred Ndidi.

Barça are said to be actively engaging in the summer transfer market to secure the services of a top-tier midfielder.

The preferred strategy is to bolster the team with a player possessing physical strength, adept positioning, and the ability to operate in front of the defence to lower the pressure on more technically oriented players.

Numerous potential candidates are under consideration, and the team is actively exploring the prospect of acquiring Ndidi. The Nigerian midfielder’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and he has opted not to renew.

Now, it must be noted that there is interest from elsewhere as well, but Barcelona’s interest goes way back, meaning that they are well-placed in their pursuit.

There will not be much money to invest

Barcelona are currently operating under the awareness that there will be limited financial resources available for investment in the summer. Consequently, the likelihood of securing a high-profile player for a key position is minimal.

Players such as Martin Zubimendi and Joshua Kimmich have already been excluded from the list as Barcelona are unable to meet the valuation demands.

In response to these financial constraints, the sports management is creating a list of more economically feasible footballers, among which is Ndidi, who has demonstrated significant prowess in the Premier League, making him a strategic target for the summer.

Resistance from Leicester but interest aplenty

SPORT mentions that Ndidi caught the attention of Barcelona a couple of seasons back as well but his price tag exceeded €60 million, making it impossible for the club to secure his signature.

Currently, he has not extended his contract, leaving his future uncertain. However, with Leicester leading the Championship table, promotion back to the Premier League seems likely, and the club is keen on retaining him.

At the same time, though, Barcelona are not the only team chasing his acquisition as Juventus is progressing as well. Sevilla have also expressed interest, and several top Premier League teams are considering adding him to their squad.
