Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United reportedly target $50M-rated 17-year-old Argentina star

Ruben Amorim’s Manchester United reportedly target $50M-rated 17-year-old Argentina star

Since his appointment in November, Ruben Amorim has been expected to lead Manchester United’s rebuilding project, despite an underwhelming 2024–25 campaign. Now, with plans to reshape the squad in the upcoming transfer window, United are reportedly eyeing a $50 million-rated 17-year-old sensation from Argentina.

One of Amorim’s biggest challenges this season has been Manchester United’s lack of firepower, particularly after injuries to Amad Diallo and the departures of Marcus Rashford and Antony—players who were never adequately replaced. To address the club’s attacking woes, the Red Devils are now looking to add creativity and goal-scoring depth.

According to The Sun, United have set their sights on River Plate’s Franco Mastantuono. The 17-year-old has already broken into the first team and is considered one of Argentina’s most promising young talents. His performances have also drawn attention from European giants like Real Madrid and Barcelona.

Mastantuono, a left-footed playmaker currently deployed as a right winger, fits seamlessly into Amorim’s preferred 3-4-3 system. At Sporting Lisbon, Amorim made a name for himself by developing young talent, and Mastantuono’s profile aligns with that philosophy.

The teenager has a €45 million release clause, which rises to €50 million in the final 10 days of the transfer window. According to the report, Manchester United are weighing up a move that would activate the clause. Should the deal materialize, Mastantuono would follow in the footsteps of fellow River Plate products Julian Alvarez and Claudio Echeverri, who also made high-profile moves to Europe.

River Plate will participate in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, facing Chelsea, Monterrey, and Urawa Red Diamonds in Group E. With 3 goals and 2 assists in 11 matches this season, Mastantuono will have the chance to showcase his talent on the global stage.

United also chasing Wolves striker Matheus Cunha

Manchester United are also said to be in pursuit of Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha. The Brazilian striker has impressed this season, and while Arsenal and Newcastle are reportedly monitoring him, United are believed to be leading the race.

According to Fabrizio Romano, talks are ongoing between the clubs, though Wolves’ £62.5 million release clause could complicate matters. Despite United’s uncertain status in European competitions next season, Cunha is reportedly open to a move to Old Trafford, where he would fill a major void in the attacking line.
