Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez select they first coach for Deportivo LSM

Just two weeks ago, Luis Suárez announced he would be teaming up with Lionel Messi on a new soccer venture. Deportivo LSM—named after Suárez himself and originally founded in 2018—has now been renamed Deportivo LSM in preparation for its 2025 projects.

The Argentine star has joined his longtime friend as a co-owner of the club. Starting next year, they’ll embark on the challenge of taking the team to the top tiers of Uruguayan soccer. Their journey begins in the AUF’s fourth division (División D), with the ultimate goal of competing against historic powerhouses like Nacional and Peñarol.

On Sunday, they unveiled their first-ever head coach: Rafael Cánovas, 41, who most recently managed Club Social y Deportivo Cooper in the Second Division, though he was unable to avoid relegation.

“Our goal is to build a strong foundation for the team, create a clear identity with the players, and of course, earn promotion in our first season,” said Cánovas, who previously served as an assistant coach with Miramar Misiones and Marathón of Honduras.

Cánovas will be supported by Carlos Valdez as assistant coach, Enzo Olivera as goalkeeping coach, and Santiago Mendaña as fitness coach.

The Messi & Suárez announcement

We’ve shared so much since we were kids—moments at the top of world soccer,” said Suárez. “That’s why today I want to introduce a friend and teammate who shares so many of my values and memories. This project is the perfect way to keep growing our soccer vision together. That’s why I invited Leo to join Deportivo LSM.”

Messi responded: “First of all, I want to thank Luis for this opportunity, for inviting me to be part of something we can build together. I’m proud and happy you chose me. I hope to contribute however I can and, above all, I’m excited to be by your side in this new adventure.”
