Luka Modric has emerged as one of the headline signings of the 2025-26 Serie A season, with the Croatian legend looking to make history at AC Milan. With the Italian league set to kick off this weekend, current Brazil head coach Carlo Ancelotti expressed high expectations for Modric’s impact both with the Rossoneri and across the league.
After more than a decade at Real Madrid, Modric cemented his status as one of the greatest midfielders of his generation while playing under several coaches. Among them was Ancelotti, who spent six years alongside the Croatian and won multiple trophies together, including three UEFA Champions League titles.
Speaking with Il Giornale, Ancelotti shared his thoughts on Modric’s arrival at Milan and offered a telling insight: “I spoke to him, he’ll entertain the fans, he’ll leave his mark on the league, he’s happy with the choice, he knows he can still make the World Cup, he’s an absolute professional — last year he never missed a single training session.”
Despite being 39, Modric’s professionalism and leadership remain invaluable in Ancelotti’s eyes. During the 2024-25 campaign — the final season for both at Real Madrid — the Croatian midfielder played a central role under the Italian manager, featuring in 63 matches, scoring four goals, providing nine assists, and wearing the captain’s armband.

The coach also addressed the return of Massimiliano Allegri to Milan after a difficult season where the team ended up in 9th position in the Serie A: “I’m glad Milan have turned again to Allegri: he’s an important figure the team and the club needed.”
Ancelotti’s future after Brazil
Following his departure from Real Madrid last season, Ancelotti was linked with several clubs, including AC Milan, where he won four Champions League titles — two as a player and two as a coach. Ultimately, the Brazilian Football Federation moved quickly and secured the Italian’s services.
When asked about what lies ahead, Ancelotti outlined his options: “I have three possibilities: stay here, find something interesting elsewhere, or retire.” On the latter, however, he was blunt: “I rule that out.” The Italian coach has his contract with Brazil until the conclusion of the 2026 World Cup, but the possibility of extending his deal will depend on the results obtained.
