Man Utd transfer news: Major development sees Erik ten Hag move step closer to dream Frenkie de Jong signing

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong

Manchester United have seemingly moved a step closer to the signing of Frenkie de Jong after the midfielder reportedly cleared out his Barcelona locker.

The Netherlands star was the clear No.1 target for compatriot Erik ten Hag after the former Ajax chief took over as United’s boss following interim manager Ralf Rangnick’s exit.

Ten Hag wants De Jong to become the leader of his midfield engine room. Indeed, United are short on midfield numbers, given Nemanja Matic’s exit and Paul Pogba closing on a return to Italy.

Other developments are also expected to quicken up the transfer.

Bayern Munich are set to land Liverpool forward Sadio Mane which, in turn, would allow Barcelona to move for Robert Lewandowski with the cash generated from De Jong’s transfer.

De Jong scored four goals and added five assists in 46 games in all competitions for Barca last season.

Meanwhile, United continue to be linked with PSG star Adrien Rabiot, in what would be a complete revamp of Ten Hag’s midfield.

The French giants are ready to cash in on Rabiot, who’s been linked with a move to England for years.

The 27-year-old only has a year left on his contract and could be available for just £13million.

Timber move set to fall through

Another proposed incoming looks set to stay at his current club, however. Ajax star Jurrien Timber has reportedly decided against an Old Trafford switch.

The 21-year-old is regarded as one of the best young defenders in European football. Indeed, his ability to play centrally or at right-back would have made him an invaluable signing for Ten Hag.

However, Dutch journalist Mike Verweij (via the MEN) believes the player’s preference is now to remain in the Netherlands.

In terms of outgoings, rumours persist that Cristiano Ronaldo is still considering his future at the club.

The Portugal legend has doubts that he will fit into Ten Hag’s style of play and is looking at his options.

Dean Henderson is also closing in on his loan switch to Premier League returnees Nottingham Forest.
