Simone Magill has been ruled out of the remainder of Euro 2022 after suffering a serious knee injury during Northern Ireland's opening Group A fixture against Norway.
Northern Ireland are competing at their maiden major tournament at this summer's European Championships, and began their campaign with a 4-1 defeat to the Norwegians on Thursday.
Magill was forced off with injury with 11 minutes remaining, and Northern Ireland have confirmed that the seriousness of the problem means she will not feature again in the competition.
"Northern Ireland striker Simone Magill suffered a serious knee injury during last night’s Group A opener against Norway, it has been confirmed," a statement released by the Northern Irish FA read.
"The team’s medical staff revealed Magill is set to undergo a scan later today which will confirm the extent of the injury. They further confirmed the striker will not play again during Women’s Euro 2022 in England."
The loss of Magill will be a bitter blow for Northern Ireland, with the striker just one of a handful of players in the squad who played professionally in a top flight league prior to the tournament.
It is also devastating news for the player on a more personal level. Not only has she had her major tournament debut cut short, her move to Aston Villa after a near decade-long association with Everton was announced just the day before the Norway opener.
Nadene Caldwell also suffered a knock for Northern Ireland against Norway, and will continue to be monitored. Kenny Shiels' side are next in action on Monday, as they take on Austria at St Mary's.
