Thomas Tuchel admitted ‘huge individual errors’ played a big part in the 3-0 Chelsea defeat to Leeds on Sunday.
It was a day to forget for Tuchel and the Blues as they were convincingly beaten at Elland Road. A huge mistake from Edouard Mendy helped Leeds on their way to victory.
The goalkeeper received the ball but failed to clear quickly enough. This allowed Brenden Aaronson to race in, steal the ball from him and finish into an open net.
Rodrigo made it 2-0 soon afterwards, before Jack Harrison got in on the act in the second half. He volleyed past Mendy after some good work from Rodrigo.
Things went from bad to worse for Chelsea late on as Kalidou Koulibaly picked up a second yellow card and was sent off.
During a post-match interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, Tuchel said: “We could have closed the game down in the first 20 minutes. After that it was an even game, then we gave two gifts away. What do you expect if you present two goals to an opponent in the Premier League.
“We give goals away from huge individual errors too often.”
Tuchel then hinted that Chelsea could bring in more new signings, by admitting ‘we try to make the squad better’.
Transfer period is ‘crazy’, says Thomas Tuchel
“It is what it is. This is the squad,” he continued. “My energy goes to the squad we have, we try to make the squad better, but if we don’t we fight with what we have.
“It is the transfer period and things are always crazy. We didn’t see it coming.
“We got frustrated because we had a good start, created huge chances, but we got frustrated. We conceded the first goal and then after the second one almost lost the match there and then.”
Tuchel will be hoping for a response when his side come up against Leicester City next Saturday.
