Chelsea are preparing a bid of £65million for Brighton midfielder Moises Caicedo, after they reportedly had a bid of £55million rejected.
The Todd Boehly era at Chelsea is following a similar path to when Roman Abramovich was at the helm. Indeed, the former owner spent big sums almost every transfer window, and the same is happening under Boehly.
In the first window under the American’s ownership, the Blues spent around £250million. Not many of those snares could be considered all too successful just yet.
Still, that has not stopped Chelsea from splashing big sums again during the January window. They have already spent north of £150million, with time left to bring more talent to the club.
That seems to be the plan, with Brighton’s Caicedo firmly in their thoughts for a winter snare.
After months of intrigue, an enquiry to Brighton came recently. Reports that the Blues had a bid rejected for the midfielder surfaced not long after.
Chelsea reportedly knew of Brighton’s asking price of £75million, but bid way below that, at £55million.
That rejection does not seem to have put them off going for the midfielder, though.
New Caicedo bid incoming
Indeed, The Mirror reports that Chelsea are planning to send another offer to Brighton. Clearly, they feel they can get him under the asking price, too.
The report states the fresh bid will be closer to £65million. It remains to be seen whether or not Brighton would accept that much below their asking price.
With a lot of interest now, there will surely be even more in the summer. As such, they could hold out for a bigger sum then.
What’s more, they have already lost one star man in Leandro Trossard this window. They will not want to lose another with not that long left to sign an ideal replacement.
That is especially true considering their position in the league in relation to Chelsea’s. Indeed, Brighton are sixth and the Blues are two points below, in 10th.
As such, selling them Caicedo would be aiding a direct rival mid-way through the season. Brighton will want to keep him to finish in the best place possible before entertaining the idea of selling.
Chelsea spending could backfire
Chelsea have often spent a lot of money in recent years, and a lot of the time it has worked for them.
However, a lot of new players have walked through the door this season. Sometimes, it is hard to see where all of these new faces will fit.
New players are fighting with other big-money signings for a place in the side. That cannot do team morale a lot of good, given everyone wants to start.
They will hope all the new signings they are making guide them back up the table. Maybe that will happen, but it will certainly be to the detriment of some other stars.
