Arsenal continue recruiting as La Liga defender talks begin amid interest from other clubs

Ivan Fresneda, Real Valladolid, September 2022

Arsenal are looking to make a few signings in quick succession, as reported talks with La Liga defender Ivan Fresneda are quickly following the signing of Leandro Trossard.

The build up to Arsenal’s winter transfer market was filled with reports over the future of Mykhaylo Mudryk. It seemed certain that he would join, if the Gunners were willing to pay Shakhtar Donetsk’s asking price.

However, it seems the north London club thought the figure of around £88million was too much. That left the door open for Chelsea to swoop, and they did just that.

Arsenal moved quickly to snare a new attacking talent after they decided against the Mudryk transfer. Indeed, they signed Trossard from Brighton in what seemed a very short process from the period of interest to the deal being done.

That snare is one that could help them maintain their title fight. Arsenal’s attackers are red hot at the moment, but depth up top is ideal to freshen up, and if anybody picks up an injury.

The same could be said for any area of the pitch, and it seems the Gunners have that in mind.

Following the snare of Trossard, Fabrizio Romano revealed that the midfield and right-back were positions they are looking to strengthen.

Within that, he revealed Arsenal were one of the sides in the race for Fresneda.

Arsenal open Fresneda talks

Now, Romano has reported that interest has gone one step further. Indeed, he states Mikel Arteta’s side have ‘opened talks’ to explore the signing of the right-back.

Discussions are reportedly taking place on both ‘clubs and agent side’.

Romano also reports there are ‘3/4 clubs keen on’ Fresneda. With that being said, Arsenal could find themselves in a battle for the signing.

However, it would be hard to find a player that does not want to join a club that are at the top of the Premier League, with breathing distance to second place.

What’s more, Fresneda is currently plying his trade for Real Valladolid, who are 17th in La Liga. As such, the move to Arsenal would be a big jump.

Potential for one in one out

It has been reported of late that there is interest in Cedric Soares. The signing of Fresneda, in that case, means there would be one right-back leaving and one remaining – effectively no change.

It remains to be seen how effective Fresneda could be when called upon. To date, he has played 13 games of senior football.

However, Arteta will not be looking at him for no reason. Cedric has not managed to get himself near the starting lineup for some time, but perhaps Fresneda could.

Having more quality options further down the pecking order will strengthen Arsenal, so they can continue fighting for honours in the future.
