Manchester United legend Paul Scholes hailed the performance of an Old Trafford star he thought was a ‘one-trick pony’ following Saturday’s 2-0 win over Everton.
Erik ten Hag’s men briefly moved back into third place in the table after goals from Scott McTominay and Anthony Martial earned them victory over a struggling Toffees side who offered very little in attack.
There was a major concern though as Marcus Rashford limped off with a groin injury late on, having missed numerous chances to add to his impressive goal haul this season.
Another player who squandered chances for Erik ten Hag’s men was winger Antony. However, Scholes still thought he had his best game in a United shirt yet.
The Brazilian gave Everton full-back Ben Godfrey a torrid time, with the visiting defender taken off at half-time by Sean Dyche.
And speaking after the game, Scholes told BT Sport: “I used to think of him as a one-trick pony. I think that was the best game I’ve seen him play for Manchester United today.”
Martial also came off the bench to score United’s second, teed up by Rashford after a mistake from Seamus Coleman.
The Frenchman has been hit hard by numerous injury issues this season and has not started since January.
His strike on Saturday was his seventh in 17 outings this term, and with Rashford bow facing a spell out, Martial looks set to play a major role in the final games of the campaign.
Martial fitness now key for United
And Scholes emphasised the need to keep him fully fit, with Martial considered a better central option than Wout Weghorst.
“It’s great to have him back, we all know the quality he has got but he has to stay fit,” Scholes said.
“He hasn’t got a good record fitness-wise. If he’s playing in this team [injury free] he’s scoring 20-25 goals.”
United are back in action on Thursday night when they host Sevilla in the Europa League quarter-finals.
