Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez made it abundantly clear in his post-match press conference earlier today that the club need to sign a new right-back, as he said: “We need a pure right-back.”
Joao Cancelo of Manchester City continues to be the manager’s preferred option, but Barcelona are also making a move for Ivan Fresneda of Real Valladolid.
The 18-year-old is seen as a younger and more cost-effective option by the club and they have already made some progress in their pursuit of the Spaniard.
But, the La Liga champions might now have to face a fresh hurdle to sign Fresneda, in the form of arch-rivals Real Madrid.
Real Madrid reignite pursuit of Fresneda
Indeed, as per SPORT, Real Madrid have rekindled their interest in signing Fresneda as there are concerns over Dani Carvajal’s performances heading into the new season.
Los Blancos had been linked with a move for the 18-year-old Valladolid starlet earlier this summer, but those rumours had gone quiet as it appeared that the club were happy with their current right-back options.

But, now, it is said that Carvajal’s performances during the pre-season have left Real Madrid considering reinforcing the position, with Fresneda, a former trainee of their academy, back on the club’s agenda.
Barcelona have already made an offer for Fresneda
As things stand, Barcelona might have an edge over Real Madrid in the race for Fresneda as they have already lodged an offer for his services.
The Blaugrana are understood to have tabled a proposal worth €8 million plus €10 million in variables, while also being open to offering Estanis Pedrola as part of the deal.
But with Real Madrid now entering the picture, the negotiations could be affected.
Los Blancos already beat Barcelona to the signing of Arda Guler this summer and might look for a repeat, or at least hope to drive up the price for their rivals.
Fresneda, who has a €20 million release clause in his contract, has rejected other teams to wait for Barcelona. But whether he would turn down his boyhood club remains to be seen.
