Ex-Fifa official: Sakala deserves extended ban as Rangers controversy analysed

Keith Hackett has claimed Rangers forward Fashion Sakala should have been sent off for his “kick out” on Cammy Kerr.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Fifa and Premier League official suggested Sakala, 25, would be serving a ban now if VAR had been in operation Ibrox.

The Gers beat Dundee 1-0 on Wednesday night to progress to the semi-final of the Scottish League Cup.

In the second half of the game, referee Willie Collum booked Sakala and Kerr after they tangled off the ball.

As quoted by the Daily Record (20 October), Dundee boss Gary Bowyer rued what he believed was “a definite red” for Sakala.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the second-half incident, Hackett said: “Look, he has not helped himself.

“He has used his foot on his opponent off the ball. He has effectively kicked out. If that was your player and your player did not that would you expect a red card?

“I think it is a red card, I have to say. The ball is not there. He is kicking the player.

“The reason the referee has not issued a red card is because he must not have had a clear view of the incident. That creates an element of doubt and you cannot issue a red card unless you are certain.

“When you see it on replays you get the clarity. This is why they have brought in VAR.”
